October Is Fire Prevention Month

October is Fire Prevention Month, a time to focus on fire safety, preparedness and the simple steps we can all take to help prevent fires.

Fire prevention is not about what happens when firefighters arrive at a fire. It starts long before that, with education, preparation and awareness. Fire safety information, practical tips and a closer look at the work we do throughout the year to help keep our community safe will be shared on our Facebook page.

One of the ways we work to prevent fires is through public education. From visiting local schools and community groups to helping residents with smoke alarms and sharing fire safety information, these efforts give us an opportunity to connect with our community and help people better understand how to protect their homes, families and themselves.

And while October gives us a reason to put a special focus on fire prevention, it is something we work on all year long.

For the Paris Fire Department, fire prevention is 24/7, 365 days a year.

Fire Prevention Week

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10. This year’s national campaign includes a focus on the safe charging of devices with lithium-ion batteries, an important topic as these batteries become increasingly common in the devices we use every day. We’ll be sharing information about this and other fire safety topics throughout the month.

Make Fire Safety Part of Your Routine

October is a good time to take a few minutes to think about fire safety at home.

Check your smoke alarms. Review your home fire escape plan. Talk with your family about what to do if a fire occurs. Take a look around your home for potential fire hazards and make any changes that could help make your home safer.

Follow the Paris Fire Department on Facebook throughout October for Fire Safety Friday tips, fire prevention information and a closer look at the work we do to help keep our community safe.
