Every July, communities across the country celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, an annual initiative led by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This year’s theme, “The Power of Parks & Recreation”, recognizes the many ways parks and recreation bring people together through connection, play, nature, community, belonging, and well-being.
Here in Paris, we see that power every day.
Whether you’re taking your kids to the playground, enjoying a walk on one of our trails, cooling off at the splash pad, participating in youth sports, attending a community event, or simply relaxing in one of our parks, Paris Parks & Recreation is committed to providing spaces and programs that help our community thrive.
The Power of Parks in Paris
Parks are more than green spaces. They are where children discover new interests, neighbors become friends, families make memories, and our community comes together.
Throughout the year, Paris Parks & Recreation offers opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the outdoors. From youth athletics and seasonal events to community festivals, playgrounds, walking trails, and recreational facilities, our parks help make Paris a great place to live, work, and play.
Employee Spotlight: Emily Berry
This Parks and Recreation Month, we’re proud to recognize Emily Berry, Recreation Program Coordinator for Paris Parks & Recreation.
Emily joined the City of Paris in May 2025 and is now in her second year of serving our community. Since joining the department, she has launched several new programs, including Youth Pickleball, Youth Summer Day Camps, and Splashing Through the Snow, while continuing community favorites like Spooktacular and the Community Easter Egg Hunt.
Before coming to Paris, Emily worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, serving as the public face of the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge in Haywood County. She brings a unique perspective and passion for nature to our Parks team.
When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Emily says it’s the opportunity to watch people enjoy the experiences she’s helped create. “My favorite moments are when I can step back during an event, watch people having fun, and realize all the planning and hard work was worth it.”

Park and Recreation Professionals Day — July 17
On Friday, July 17, we’ll join agencies across the nation in celebrating Park and Recreation Professionals Day. This day recognizes the dedicated professionals who work behind the scenes to keep parks clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for everyone to enjoy while creating meaningful programs and experiences for their communities.
From maintaining our parks and athletic fields to planning events, coordinating youth programs, and caring for our recreational facilities, our Parks & Recreation team works year-round to serve the residents of Paris.
