The City of Paris recently celebrated the graduation of its 2026 Citizens Academy, a six-week civic education program designed to provide residents with an in-depth understanding of how local government operates.
The Citizens Academy is structured as a hands-on learning experience that connects participants directly with city departments, staff, and operations. Each participant completed 12 hours of instruction through weekly two-hour sessions focused on key city services and functions.
Throughout the program, participants engaged in guided tours, interactive activities, and presentations from city staff and leadership. These experiences provided a behind-the-scenes look at how departments work together to serve the community.
Program highlights included a K9 demonstration with the Police Department, a zoning and planning exercise, a tour of Public Works operations, an inside look at Parks and Recreation facilities, and a visit to the Paris-Henry County Animal Shelter. Participants also took part in discussions centered on community growth, development, and long-term planning initiatives shaping the future of Paris.

The program is designed to strengthen transparency, encourage civic engagement, and help residents better understand the services and decision-making processes that impact their daily lives. Topics covered included public safety, infrastructure, parks, planning, and administrative operations.
The 2026 Citizens Academy concluded with a graduation ceremony at the May City Commission Meeting recognizing participants for their commitment to learning about local government. Graduates received certificates of completion and were presented with special Ambassador pins, designating them as official ambassadors for the City of Paris.
The City of Paris extends its appreciation to all participants for their time, engagement, and dedication. Programs like the Citizens Academy continue to play an important role in building stronger connections between residents and their local government while fostering informed and active community members.
The City looks forward to continuing this program in future years and welcoming new participants interested in gaining a deeper understanding of local government operations.
