Project Overview
The City of Paris is investing in major safety and accessibility improvements at the intersection of Tyson Avenue, Mineral Wells Avenue, and Veterans Drive, commonly known by residents as the “Catfish” intersection.
Funded through the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT) 2022 Multimodal Access Grant Program, this project will modernize one of the city’s busiest intersections with enhanced pedestrian accommodations and new sidewalks connecting key community destinations.
The project reflects the City’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists while making travel safer and more accessible for everyone.

Project Funding
The project is funded through a 90/10 grant partnership, with TDOT providing 90 percent of the project cost and the City of Paris contributing the remaining 10 percent.

Project Improvements
The project includes several upgrades designed to improve safety, accessibility, and sidewalk connectivity, including:
- New pedestrian crossing signals at all four corners of the intersection
- Reconfigured pedestrian refuge islands (traffic islands) to improve pedestrian safety
- ADA-compliant curb ramps and accessibility improvements
- Construction of a new sidewalk along Tyson Avenue connecting the Sonic area to the Driver Services (DMV) office
- The new sidewalk will also connect with the existing sidewalk near Dale Street, creating a more continuous pedestrian network

During construction, motorists should expect temporary lane closures, shifting traffic patterns, and reduced speeds through the work zone.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution, obey all posted traffic control devices, and allow extra travel time when passing through the intersection.
