The Paris Fire Department is responsible for issuing open burning permits for the City of Paris. Fire Department personnel will obtain information from the individual requesting the burn permit and relay the information to the Fire Marshal or Captain on shift. The engine company personnel or the Fire Marshal then will go to each site to inspect the material to be burned and review safety guidelines and subsequently issue or deny a permit. Currently, there is no charge for a burn permit. They may be obtained by calling the Paris Fire Department Business Office between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

No person shall kindle or maintain any bonfire or rubbish fire or authorize any such fire to be kindled or maintained without a permit. The fire official may prohibit any or all bonfires and outdoor rubbish fires when atmospheric conditions does not permit, or when local and state burning band are in effect, making such fires hazardous.

The burn permit site must be no less than 50 feet from any structure and adequate provisions must be made to prevent the fire from spreading within 50 feet of any structure. A competent person must constantly attend burn permit sites until such fire is extinguished. Such person shall have a garden hose connected to the water supply, or other fire extinguishing equipment readily available for use.

Only scrap wood products and brush can be burned. Certain materials shall not be burned outdoors anywhere within the corporate limits of the City of Paris. Those materials are as follows: oil base products, roofing materials such as shingles, wood products containing glue, sheet rock, insulation, foam products, plastic products, leaves, garbage, pallets, cardboard, papers, and rubber products.

Provided, however, that this section shall not prohibit the use of an outdoor fire for cooking or for recreational warming fires using a fuel source consisting only of wood, charcoal, propane, or natural gas when such cooking or warming fires are confined and contained within some type of cooking device, outdoor fireplace, or outdoor fire pit.

Exception for burning permit: The Fire Chief may allow, by permit, the burning of certain materials under exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances shall be defined, but not limited to, the clearing of property for residential or commercial development, removal of storm debris, or other similar situations.
